Alex McElroy is a Director in Guidehouse’s Governance and Risk Consulting Practice. He has more than 20 years of experience building and leading comprehensive risk programs and providing strategic advisory to Federal government agencies and commercial organizations of various sizes, stages of maturity, levels of complexity, and financial performance. In his current role, Alex is designing, implementing, and maturing ERM and internal control programs at the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health & Human Services, and Farm Credit Administration.
Prior to joining Guidehouse, Alex served as Vice President, ERM at PenFed Credit Union. He led PenFed’s ERM department and was responsible for supporting risk owners in identifying, assessing, responding, monitoring, and reporting top corporate and department-level risks to executive management and the board of directors. Alex also supported key enterprise initiatives, including risk appetite development, strategic planning, capital planning and stress testing, model risk management, budgeting and forecasting, key risk indicator and tolerance threshold development, ERM training, mergers and acquisitions, and operational risk management. He served on multiple committees, collaborated with business leaders across the organization, and interacted regularly with the board, regulators, auditors, and strategic business partners.
Before joining PenFed, Alex provided governance, risk, compliance, and audit advisory services to financial services companies and multiple Federal government agencies. During his 17 years at Grant Thornton LLP, Deloitte & Touché LLP, and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Alex led risk management and program compliance engagements, performed internal controls assessments, conducted complex financial and operational audits, and analyzed the performance of large Federally-insured mortgage, small business, agriculture, and student loan portfolios. Alex also worked as a financial journalist for the Bureau of National Affairs Inc., a specialized publisher of Federal legislative news and regulatory information services.
Alex holds an MBA in Finance from George Mason University and BA in Diplomacy & Foreign Affairs from Miami University. He is a frequent contributor to industry forums and the risk community and is regularly invited to speak on emerging topics and trends. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner.
